Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
It seems the gospel was a serious culture shock to the Cretans.
Thus the basic teaching.
Of course they were liars, evil brutes and lazy gluttons as chapter one tells us even one of their own prophets had called them.
What an amazing term … Cretan.
So succinct!!
You can call someone a liar, evil brute and lazy glutton all in one slam.
You Cretan !!! LOLOLOL
ooops
I guess I’m forgetting where I am.
I’ll laugh uproariously more quietly.

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”
The grace of God teaches …
us to say no…
That’s the first time I have noticed grace being used in this way…. teaching.
Usually couple it with forgiving everything and anything … but it goes one step further and teaches us to stay away from ungodliness and worldly passions.
14
“who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”
redeemed not perfect…
and eager… I like this eager to do good.
doesn’t say we always succeed but we are willing. Cool.
Purify … is this why bad things happen to us … to make us pure?
15
“Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.”
How is it that you control who despises you after you rebuke them?
Maybe the word love is missing here or is just understood.
Encourage and rebuke with God’s authority is always done with love.

So where is everyone?
Get over here and join in you Cretans. 😉

Yes Val, we are here. Kids are on summer holidays – makes me feel like I’m on holidays even though I’m not! and the heat slows me down, too.
I have been thinking about those Cretans and I think you are right the gospel was a serious culture shock to them. Seems to me Paul is telling Titus to tell the Cretans to just be nice to one another!
I like v.10 it seems to summarize Paul’s instructions, “so in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.”
Some people who profess faith give God a bad name!
I also find it a curious instruction, “Do not let anyone despise you” (v.15). How can you control how people act towards you?

I’ve been thinking about God’s grace that teaches us to say, “no”.
In the world when people extend grace or overlook a misdeed they generally think that people given “an inch will take a mile” meaning they will expect to be shown more leniency in the future. Therefore, in the world, grace tends to teach people to continue in their wrong behaviour. So how does God’s grace differ?

Hi Susan and all, I have not figured out how to go from one page to the next.
I believe strongly in the message of Titus two in verses 3-8. It is hard to find nowadays, but I’ve been in churches where the women did teach each other and there was real community among the women.

to answer Susan, God’s grace differs in that we can’t earn his Grace. But we owe Him our obedience. Repentance means we will turn away from that activity. and he will forgive by his grace. Grace from our friends may or may not enable sin, it doesn’t really matter. Its all just the process of living among humans.

I guess it must be the teaching to say no.
In the world grace is rare …
God’s grace forgives and takes responsibility for the one it has extended grace toward.
?? Maybe 😉

You are having a heat wave and we are in the deep freeze. It is -22C here right now.

I can’t imagine what -22C feels like! It’s been up to 42C here.
I think that’s a good point Deborah, we can’t earn God’s grace. Whereas if people extend grace to us we often feel entitled to it.

It is grace that teaches us to say no. Not punishments or threats but grace. When we realize we are the receipents of God's undeserved favour it changes us on the inside and we start saying no to ungodly behaviour.

v.7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good.
We are to be role models.

v.3-4 teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children…
The first step in this process is to find ways of connecting the older women to the younger women. Many church programs either appeal to older or younger women. Hard to find programs that appeal to both.
