So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” (Genesis 18:13)

Both surprise and scorn can make us laugh. Abraham laughs when God tells him that Sarah will have a son (Genesis 17:15-21). His reaction is surprise at how God will fulfil his promise (Genesis 12:2). Yet God challenges Sarah about her laughter and says, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (v. 14). This suggests Sarah laughed out of unbelief or scorn. It’s okay to be surprised by God’s promises but not scornful.
