“Just as it is written: ‘Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.’” Romans 9:13

Paul spends three chapters discussing Israel’s position with God after their failure to accept Jesus as their Messiah. Paul quotes Malachi 1:2-3 indicating that Jacob and Esau represent nations, not individuals. This quote is a figure of speech, where love and hate aren’t used as emotions but indicate God’s Sovereign choices. God will never abandon Israel. This is good news for us. If it was possible for God to abandon Israel, then it would be possible for God to abandon us. Thankfully this isn’t the case.
