“Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.” Romans 10:3
The Israelites rejected Jesus as their Messiah because they failed to understand God’s righteousness, despite the fact that all the teaching of their Scriptures pointed to a Messiah—the covenants, the law, the temple worship, the promises and the patriarchs (9:4-5). They reasoned they could become righteous by their own efforts. It’s a trap many still fall into. They underestimate God’s holiness and aim to please him through good works. They don’t submit to his requirements.
