Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23
Our heart is used symbolically for our affections, ambitions and motivations – those things which provide the stimulus for us to act. We guard our hearts by being careful about what we dwell on. The thoughts that we like to focus on and return to regularly in our minds may seem harmless. Yet if they are ungodly thoughts they will negatively influence our behaviour. This is why Paul urges us to think about those things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable (Phillippians 4:8).
