“Be strong and courageous … Be strong and very courageous … Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” … “Only be strong and courageous!” (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9 & 18)
Why is Joshua told so many times to be strong and courageous? (see also Deuteronomy 31:7 & 23). Forty years earlier, when he spied out the land, he had been strong and courageous as he stood with Caleb (Numbers 14:6-10). Perhaps now, he has become comfortable playing a support role to Moses. However, with Moses’ upcoming departure, God is challenging him to step into leadership.
