The Jews felt a sense of entitlement because they were descended from Abraham. They trusted their own status and righteousness, but John tells them to repent so they can be included in God’s kingdom. Likewise, we might feel entitled if we have lived a good life, attended church and regularly read the Bible. However, to be part of God’s kingdom, we trust in Jesus’ righteousness, not our own.
