“He went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.” Matthew 2:23

There is no specific prophesy that the Messiah would be called a Nazarene. However, Nazareth means “branch or a shoot.” Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah all call the Messiah, the Branch. After the Israelites were exiled by the Babylonians, the Davidic line of kings seemed to die. But God chose Mary and Joseph, from David’s line to be parents to Jesus. He was like a shoot or a branch coming from a dead stump.
