“I will not,” he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, “I will, sir,” but he did not go. Matthew 21:29-30

God is patient. He gives people time to change their minds. However, the sons were asked to “work today.” There was a limit on the opportunity. We cannot presume upon God’s patience because one day this period of grace will end. The second son did plan to work, but didn’t go. Good intentions aren’t enough. God looks for commitment to his cause.
