Short Devotion : Matthew 12:2

When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” Matthew 12:2

How quick we are to point out those who aren’t meeting our standards! Jesus responds from Scripture. He cites a king who ate consecrated bread (v. 4). He refers to priests who work on the Sabbath (v. 5). And he quotes a prophet, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice” (Hoses 6:6). Jesus is prophet, priest and king. He is our standard bearer, not a list of rules and regulations. If we act without mercy, we aren’t following his example.
