“Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.” Matthew 1:16
Matthew makes a point of not calling Joseph the father of Jesus, only that Mary was his mother. In the following verses, Matthew explains the circumstances of Jesus’ birth. Joseph lived with a great deal of misunderstanding. People would have questioned his decision to marry Mary. Was he the father of her baby or not? Sometimes we are called to fill roles where we aren’t able to satisfactorily explain to others what we are doing, or why.
