“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.” Mark 16:1

There are a number of Marys in the gospels. Here, it seems that Mary, the mother of James, and Salome were mothers of disciples. It was a courageous decision to anoint Jesus’ body, while their sons were in hiding. Mothers, and women in general, were often undervalued in this culture, but not in Jesus’ economy. Jesus chose people that were discounted in their society, yet they were valuable to him. So are we.
