“To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?” Luke 7:31

Jesus was looking for a picture or an illustration to show people their narrow-mindedness. He chose the picture of unpleasable children who refused to engage with the song being played. Neither a happy song nor a funeral dirge suited them. Likewise, the Pharisees weren’t pleased with John the Baptist’s strict observance of the Law nor Jesus’ emphasis on God’s grace. The Pharisees closed their minds to God and rejected his plan and purpose for them (verse 30). They missed experiencing God’s saving grace.
