“Tell me: John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven’ … “But if we say, ‘Of human origin’…” Luke 20:3-6
These religious leaders weighed up their options when answering Jesus’ straightforward question. They didn’t even consider answering truthfully because their main concern was maintaining their status in their religious community. These spiritual leaders were mercenaries with little interest in the truth. Let’s not be like them! Instead, let’s seek the truth regardless of how uncomfortable and inconvenient, regardless of how much that truth will change us.
