“Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” Luke 17:9-10
The standard practice amongst servants was to serve the master’s meal after working all day in the fields. They didn’t expect any thanks, it was their duty. Likewise, we are God’s servants, but we willingly serve God out of a response of love. However, our service doesn’t entitle us to God’s blessings. We can’t manipulate God through good works.
