“When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.” John 11:17 NLT
Jesus receives the news of Lazarus’ death and stays where he is for two days (v.6). He then takes a day to travel to Bethany. Even if Jesus had left immediately, Lazarus would be dead. Nevertheless, Mary and Martha both say, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died” (v.21, 32). Jesus doesn’t disagree or explain his absence. He allows them the freedom to express their emotions. He does the same for us.
