“For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.” Hebrews 9:15
Under the first covenant, the sacrifices the people made covered their sins but didn’t set them free from guilt and didn’t empower them to stop sinning. They lived believing that God would provide a ransom that would cleanse their consciences and set them free from guilt. Jesus is that ransom—his death, our sacrifice for sin.
