“Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?” 1 Corinthians 11:13-15
The Message translation uses the word “symbolism.” Paul appeals to the symbolism of nature to make his point. In his culture, Paul wanted women to cover their heads so they didn’t look like prostitutes. Today, this is no longer relevant, but we’re still sensitive to our own cultural considerations.
