Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
A couple of snippets from the Message v.27 & 31:
“God does not respond to what we do, we respond to what God does … But by shifting our focus from what we do to what God does, don’t we cancel out all our careful keeping of the rules and ways God commanded? Not at all. What happens in fact, is that by putting that entire way of life in its proper place, we confirm it.”
If we get into the whole “keeping of the law” thing the focus is on us. Trying to keep a set of rules means we are always thinking about ourselves and about whether we are doing the “right” thing or not.
Whereas when the focus is on God, His Spirit enables us to keep the law without us even thnking about it.

don’t woory, i’m still here. the family is ill at the moment and it is time consuming caring for us all and getting rest. i’ll be back tomorrow with my thoughts on 3, 4 and 5.

Hope the family is on the mend (not just for blogging sake, but for your sake).
Meanwhile it is getting a little lonely round here.

believe me, i know the feeling. strange how difficult it can be to set aside time or take seriously something like this that has nothing but a positive impact on my growth.
chapter 3 in short – we are all sinners according to the law. but now a righteousness apart from the law has come from god. faith.
feawqkh (i liked that one)

I have been amiss here to cause a house filled with company but I am still going to try and catch up.
I love this….23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Often when a someone we know has fallen by the wayside, we forget that we too are sinners just like they are….
For some time I too wondered if I had done the right thing in various circumstances but now I just put it all in God’s hand and let him guide me without worry what is right or wrong about it.

v.21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
The law makes us conscious of sin but it does not make us righteous only Christ can do that.

v.1 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?
Paul is not afraid to confront the Jews over their deception regarding their position with God in these first 8 verses.

v.27 Where, then, is boasting?
No room for pride.

v.24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus
Let the wonder of this sink into your heart.
(From Constable's Commentary)"Do not confuse justification and sanctification. Sanctification is the process whereby God makes the believer more and more like Christ. Sanctification may change from day to day. Justification never changes. When the sinner trusts Christ, God declares him righteous, and that declaration will never be repealed. God looks on us and deals with us as though we had never sinned at all!"
Justification is a declaration of righteousness, we stand in Christ's righteousness.

v.25 He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished
The blood of animals only covered sins temporarily. It wasn't until Christ's death that sins were fully dealt with.

v.20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
Paul's conclusion no one, not even the Jews, are made right with God through the observance of the law. The law’s purpose is to make us conscious of sin and actually points out people's inability to gain heaven by their own merits.
(From Constable's Commentary) "Since man is a sinner with no help in himself and none in the law, what is left to him but to look to the mercy of God?…In a court of justice it is only after every defence has failed and the law itself has been shown to be broken, it is only at this point that the appeal is made to the judge for his clemency. The epistle has brought us to such a point."

From the Message:
v.27-28 What we’ve learned is this: God does not respond to what we do; we respond to what God does. We’ve finally figured it out. Our lives get in step with God and all others by letting him set the pace, not by proudly or anxiously trying to run the parade.
I love the way the Message puts this. We respond to what God does.
