6:16 There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Some of these are obvious, a lying tongue, rushing into evil, shedding blood. Others are less obvious. Haughty eyes reveal a bad attitude, hearts that devises wicked schemes reveal a bad thought life. Someone who stirs up conflict may do so in subtle and non-obvious ways.

7:1 My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.
God’s commands are to fill our minds and be a security against the bad thoughts that the devil drops uninvited into our thinking. Building up a deposit of good thoughts, will helps us stand against the devil’s unwanted thoughts.

The wise can be instructed but not the mockers or the wicked (v. 7-8). The wise are teachable.

This was true for Tamar (Ruth 4:12), whose name was used in a blessing at Ruth and Boaz’s wedding. Likewise we don’t want to use the name of those who are wicked. We don’t even want to name our children with same name as an annoying child we were at school with.
