Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
v.1-16
This parable falls between, “the first will be last…last will be first” (19:30) and “the last will be first, and the first will be last” (20:16) and explains this phrase. They complained (v.11) because the landowner had been generous to the latecomers but had only been fair to them (one denarius being a normal day’s pay). The landowner’s explanation (v.13-15) is that he is not only fair but also gracious and generous. The application is that rewards are not given in proportion to what we deserve. Rewards are gifts of grace and are not identical in proportion. Even those hired early were graciously hired by the landowner when he could just as easily not hire them at all.

(From Constable commentary) "The fact that the other disciples were angered at James and John shows that they were in heart and spirit no better than the two brothers. . . . They all wanted the first place.

v.28 The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus came to serve. He served us by dying for us but also by loving us, forgiving us, showing us grace, compassion and patience. Therefore we serve others.

v.32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
Love the way Jesus did not assume but asked what they wanted. An example we need to follow.
