Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
v.4-5 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written…”
The chief priests and teachers of the law knew their Scriptures but did not act on it. Head knowledge isn’t enough.

1:20; 2:12, 13, 19, 22
Four times angels/dreams are mentioned in this chapter and once in chapter 1. Mostly to Joseph but once to the Magi.
Perhaps God used such an obvious means of guidance because of the importance of these messages. Although God does not always use this method of giving guidance, we shouldn’t discount it.

v.13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
Stay there until I tell you. Not, stay there until Herod dies, but until I tell you. Likewise we need to stay where we are until God tells us otherwise.

v.15 And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Fulfilled not in the sense of prophesy as Hosea didn’t predict anything with this statement. Perhaps best explained by thinking that Jesus’ ministry fulfilled or confirmed or completed Israel’s history. Or perhaps this quote in Constable’s commentary is helpful: "Matthew looked back and carefully drew analogies between the events of the nation's history and the historical incidents in the life of Jesus.”

It is interesting that in this chapter Jesus has already caused conflict with King Herod (v.2); worship from Gentiles (v.11); and apathy from the chief priests (v.5). Three things that will continue to happen throughout Jesus’ ministry.
