Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
v.7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
Moses did not “command” divorce (Deuteronomy 24:1-4). It was a concession. So it is interesting how the Pharisees had interpreted this passage and weren’t even embarrassed to tell Jesus their wrong interpretation. They were deceived.

v.17 Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
Only God would be good enough to obtain eternal life by what he did.

v.21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
“If you want to give it all you’ve got” (MSG).
“If you want to be perfect…” that is, complete, mature. Jesus is not concerned about talking about rewards.
(From Constable commentary) “First, Jesus called a person to follow Him, that is, to begin learning from Him as a disciple. Second, He called His disciples to believe on Him as the God-man. Third, He called His believing disciples to continue following Him and believing on Him because He had an important job for them to do.”

v.25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
Jesus’ disciples wanted to turn away the children (v.13) and welcome the wealthy. (Jews believed that wealth was a sign of God’s favour.) So often we get God’s ways back to front!

v.27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”
Peter wasn’t afraid to ask, “What’s in it for me?” perhaps prompted by Jesus words in v.21 “you will have treasure in heaven.” Jesus doesn’t rebuke him for it.

v.29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
(From Constable’s commentary) Jesus meant that everyone who makes a sacrifice to follow Him will receive much more than he or she sacrificed as a reward
