Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
v.1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
Many feel that the transfiguration fulfilled Jesus’ words in 16:28 (Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”).
Also interesting to read this experience from Peter’s viewpoint: 2 Peter 1:16-18
It was like these three disciples were given a foretaste, a glimpse, a deposit of the coming kingdom.

v.11-12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him
John the Baptist did not restore all things because the Jewish leaders did not recognize him as the forerunner, as the Elijah. Even John didn’t always realize he was the Elijah. The prophecy awaits a further fulfilling at a later date.

v.19-20 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith.”
So little faith = so little dependence on Jesus to work through them.

v.26-27 “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
God’s children are exempt from paying the tax to maintain the temple (Exodus 30:13 – half a shekel that was worth two drachmas.). It may also indicate that if God’s children are exempt from maintain the temple then the end of the Mosaic Law, this system of worship, was drawing near.
There are many things we are exempt from having to do but sometimes it is better to go along with them to avoid causing offence.
