Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
v.10-13 Jesus seems to spend a lot of time going backwards and forwards across the lake. Maybe it was the only way he could get some peace and quiet.
I remember when my kids were little and I wanted some peace and quiet I would vacuum! lol!

LOL I know some people who put their kids to sleep with the sound of the vacuum … it does drown out a lot of extraneous noise …
They walked with Christ and had a hard time understanding who they were walking with … even after two miracles of feeding thousands with only enough to feed one or two … they were worried that they had forgotten to take food with them on the boat … Jesus SEEMS annoyed … LOL
He is still patient with them, though, and leads them to the truth ever so skillfully.
He states that they are hard hearted again … I found this an interesting characteristic of the disciples at this time … hmmmm
I know I get pretty hard hearted at times when some part of life gets too tough for me … then I crumble and ask the Lord what I should do … and I think … why on earth don’t I think to ask first before I get all frustrated … LOL

Yes I noticed that the disciples are again described as hard hearted v.17 which is remarkable to me. I mean these disciples left everything to follow Jesus but they were ‘blind’ towards what Jesus was trying to teach them. Makes me wonder about my own ‘blind spots’.

Many times just in life, I have seen people resistant to things that I am trying to show them in the bible. They just won’t, or can’t get it. Then later they come to me excited about exactly the thing I showed them. God has his time for everyone, I think their time was predestined to be the day of pentecost.
Yes, I read everything here.

Also makes me think about Jesus’ method of teaching: “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” v.15. I guess Jesus was thinking about the Pharisees in v.11-12 but the disciples were thinking about the yeast in bread.
It is very curious to me that Jesus uses such an indirect method of teaching.
I guess it fits in with Mark 4:9 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Jesus’ teaching is only for those with ‘ears’ to hear it or only those who are open to it. This is quite different to the confrontational approach of some Christians.

Yes Nate, their time could well have been the day of Pentecost. Some think that Mark 9:1 refers to Pentecost but more of that when we get to chapter 9.

The challenge of v.34 doesn’t go away: “if anyone would come after me, he must deny himself”
Too often we hear Christians talking about what they want. Even if it is what they want God to do in their lives, their homes, their churches. How often do we ask God want He wants to do in our lives, our homes, our churches?
“Your Kingdom come, your will be done.”

On earth, as it is in heaven.
That has hit a note in me. Hos often are churchs doing things truly for God, or are they doing them for the viewers outside.
I once could not comprehend my brother-in-law, who is a pastor, that he did not measure success by the number of the congregation. Now I understand and respect him for it.

v.2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
Jesus was aware of people’s physical limitations (v.3).
Interesting the difference between the two stories of feeding the multitude. The first time it was the disciples who were concerned (6:35-36) that the people hadn’t eaten all day. Here it is Jesus who is concerned the people haven’t eaten for 3 days yet the disciples don’t seem concerned at all and obviously don’t expect Jesus to repeat the miracle (v.4). But, of course, we are in Gentile territory!
Perhaps also the disciples and the Jewish crowd connected Jesus feeding the people with Moses and the manna in the wilderness, thus fulfilling prophesy. Gentiles may not make this connection.

v.11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.
The Pharisees must have been aware of this miracle yet they came to argue with Jesus not learn from him.

v.31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
Began to teach – Jesus only began to teach them he must suffer only after they acknowledged him to be the Messiah. Suffering can only be handled well when we know Jesus is the Messiah. He is One who works all things together for good.

v.25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes.
Likewise, we all need a second touch!
