Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
lol… be back here as soon as I can … not meaning to be absent .. just circumstances and a robbery of my time right now … God Bless and here’s some banana muffins …

Thanks Wendy.
I wonder why and in what context John the Baptist said to Herod. v.18 “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
It is not the sort of thing Jesus said to people.
Thanks Wendy.

jesus did say to the woman at the well, “the man you are with now is not your husband.” to the woman at the well…
it may have been the circumstances surrounding which herod took came to have his brother’s wife. john was a man with a fairly large subculture following him. he may not have said it first hand to herod, but rather, word could have “gotten around.”

It was a Jewish tradition to take your brother’s wife if he had died … I think it was actually expected … so I’m wondering if Herod’s brother was still alive and well and Herodius left him to be with Herod.
This is the part I found interesting … the disciples had just gone around healing people and casting out demons … doing “miraculous” things … AND they had just witnessed with their own eyes the dividing of two fish and five loaves to feed five thousand people with 12 baskets leftover and watched Jesus walk on the water to meet them and climb in to their boat… and this is what the verse 51 says …
Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
This completely amazes me … how about you …

Yes Jon, I wondered whether it was more that word had gotten around rather than John actually saying it to Herod. It sounds very condemning whereas I don”t find Jesus words to the woman at the well condemning – more like he was just stating the facts. (Maybe this has more to do with my mental image of Jesus and John)
And Wendy I also find it amazing that the disciples hearts were hardened. I read somewhere: Miracles don’t necessarily produce faith, but faith can produce miracles. I find it encouraging thought that the disciples didn’t have heartened hearts forever but God was eventually able to break through to them.

I find it interesting that in v.31 they again didn’t have time to eat (see also 3:20). As someone pointed out previously perhaps this is why Jesus didn’t want people to tell others about how he healed them. It does seem to have created a lot of chaos.
Another phrase I find curious is in v. 48 “he was about to pass by them.” Yet it also says, “he went out to them”. So he went out to them, and then was about to pass them – it sounds like a contradiction. And if he was going to pass them by, where was he going?

He was going to meet them on the other side and surprise them with breakfast … LOL
maybe?

Breakfast? Sounds good!
I think though it points out that God wants us to ask. He doesn’t barge into our “boat” uninvited, which also makes me think we should not barge into other people’s lives without being invited. Even if we think we have the answer to their problems.

v.51-52 They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
The disciples had left everything to follow Jesus yet their hearts were hard.
Likewise it is possible for us to have hard hearts. To have a soft heart we have to be open to having our preconceived ideas about God challenged.

v.3&5-6 And they took offense at him.
He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
It was not Jesus' lack of ability or willingness that stop miracles but rather the people's attitude.
When we take offense we block miracles from happening.

v.37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
They didn't say we haven't got that much money. Between the 12 of them plus the kitty perhaps they did. However Jesus didn't expect them to spend all their money on feeding them.
We need godly wisdom as to how to spend the resources we have in helping others.
