Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
This study of Mark has been going for a month and when I checked the statcounter for July there had been 276 hits. So thanks everyone for visiting. I hope you are finding this way of studying the Bible helpful.
I find v. 8 interesting in that we are used to Jesus performing instant healings but this one seems to have taken a little longer. v.10 “again and again” also suggests an extended time.

In v.19 Jesus encourages this man to tell everyone what the Lord has done and in v. 43 Jesus again gives strict orders not to tell anyone about the healing of the girl.
Of course geographically these were two very different places. Jesus was not going to spending more time in The Decapolis whereas he would be spending more time in Galilee.
Another thought is that Jesus knew that miracles in themselves did not produce faith. Jesus performed many miracles but in the end the crowd was yelling, “Crucify him.” God’s kingdom must be received by faith and not by sight. So perhaps it was actually better for people not to “see” miracles.

I love the way Jesus is so practical v. 43 “and told them to give her something to eat.”

Hey, where is everybody? Did I forget to leave the light on or something?

Hey Susan, I am checking often. Mark is not speking to me right now. Haven’t heard from Wendy for a while, have tried to contact her and have had no luck. Jon is dealing with a new baby and a new job. He is also helping our parents move for the first time in twenty years. I’ll call him and see what he is up to. Also my parents have not got Internet set up yet and my mom needs to reformat her computer. Lots o’ stuff.

Thanks Nate.
My last thought on this chapter is in v.17 “Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.”
Often we think of Jesus as being popular with the crowds but that wasn’t always the case.
Thanks Nate.

v.30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
Did the power leaving Jesus happen with or without his conscious decision? It is hard to believe that it could happen without his conscious decision.
Anyway, since we have Jesus in us his power also resides in us.
Jesus wanted to talk to her so she knew it was her faith and not her touch that healed her.

v.36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Some versions have ignoring rather than overhearing.
Likewise we sometimes have to ignore the well meaning advice of others and trust God.

v.16-17 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
They wanted Jesus to leave because of the pigs. Prior to this they had been afraid (v.15) when they saw the man free of demons but it was when they heard about the pigs they plead with Jesus to leave.
Jesus was upsetting the local economy which apparently was more important than people getting freed of demons!
Even today not everyone will welcome Jesus or his freeing power.
