“But I only mowed it last week,” complained my teenager. “Why do I have to mow it again?”

Healthy lawns need sun and rain. Too much sun and too little rain create little growth. But too much rain and too little sun doesn’t create growth either. Sun and rain are both necessary but in balance.

God holds justice and compassion in perfect balance. Too much justice becomes a harsh authoritarian dictatorship where people are overly cautious and live in fear. Too much compassion creates people with no standards. They accept poor behaviour which causes others to suffer under their lax leadership.

As Christ’s followers, we aim to reflect his justice and compassion in balance. The more we get to know God and understand his heart, the more we will mirror his justice and compassion in our lives. We will speak truth and justice, but not in a way that harms others. We will show compassion but not enable bad behaviour. We will become people who, “will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ” (Ephesians 4:15).
