Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
This is a most amazing story. What a different time than we are used to. It seemed that spiritually speaking they all were so much more in touch with God.
They recognized this storm as something other than just a storm.
Proverbs 26:2
Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying,
So a curse without cause does not alight.
They had a direct recognition of the weather raging against them and a God that would make it so for a specific reason.
Jonah was pretty upset about going to Nineveh. To run from a God that he knew he could not run from was maybe a knee jerk reaction.
He was saying NO!!!! I’m Not going to do what you ask.
And when it came to choosing what to do to save the men he chooses to be thrown overboard to meet certain death in such a storm. Why would he choose this instead of submitting himself to God’s wishes and asking the Lord to calm the seas.
Did he want to die?
He chose suicide over obeying the Lord.
Wow …such determination to avoid something he did not want to do.

Yes, the thing that stood out to me is the reaction of the sailors. These guys seem to have more respect for God’s Sovereignity than Jonah.

There’s also a blatant similarity to Jonah’s reaction to the storm and Jesus’ reaction to a similar storm.
They were both sleeping through it while everyone was sure they were going to die.
and this
vs. 7 Each man said to his mate, “Come, let us cast lots so we may learn on whose account this calamity has struck us ” So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
Casting lots to see whose fault it was… interesting.
Should have used that on my kids.. lol

LOL
That is very funny, Val.
I do feel some sympathy for Jonah. Ninevah was Israel’s enemies and Jonah wanted God to wipe them out. Don’t we all want God to wipe out those things that defeat us? Years later Jonah’s fears were proven correct and Israel was taken into exile by these people.

v.2 because its wickedness has come up before me
It sounds like God is patient with people’s wickedness for a time but then it gets to a point where he has to deal with it – one way or another.
People often think they are getting away with wickedness or that God doesn’t care when in fact he is giving them time to repent.

I do find it odd that Jonah was knowingly doing the wrong thing yet was able to fall into a “deep sleep” v.5.

I think he didn’t care …. he was determined not to go and probably didn’t care if the ship went down.
OR
He knew that the Lord would not destroy the ship with him in it. ??

Think I’m leaning towards his determination not to go to Ninevah.

V. 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
(From Constable's Commentary) "Jonah went down to Joppa and found a ship waiting. Often when we disobey God we find that circumstances seem to accommodate us and cooperate with us."
(From Constable's Commentary) "It's possible to be out of the will of God and still have circumstances appear to be working on your behalf."

v.11-12 “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?” “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
Interesting that nowhere in this chapter does it say that Jonah prayed. Perhaps now would be a good time for a prayer of repentance but Jonah chose almost certain death instead.
