Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.

Ok, Wendy, I’ll post about it on A Booklook in a couple of days.

At church last Sunday night the minister spoke about John 4! He said the reason Jesus brought up the subject of the woman’s husbands was because He wanted to heal her emotionally of the hurts from her past. Jesus wanted to heal her of the brokeness that caused her to go from relationship to relationship and Jesus wants to do the same for us.

Such a remarkable story.
The woman at the well talks of Jacob being the father of the Jews and the Samaritans.
v. 12
How easily they believed and Jesus transcended years of bad blood between the Samaritans and Jews. He brought love. He went to their homes and hung out with them for two days. They were thrilled to bits!!!
🙂 He was such a renaissance man.

Yes I hadn’t really thought about the Samaritans inviting Jesus to stay and not caring about him being a Jew.
…
V.23-24 in the Message: It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself – Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.
I especially like the phrase: “Your worship must engage your spirit”.

v.3 Just when Jesus’ popularity was peaking he left. The disciples must have been very surprised.

v.49. You know actually Jesus didn’t do what the royal official asked. He asked him to come and Jesus didn’t but he did heal the child. I find Jesus quite often doesn’t answer my prayers the way I want!

Yes, I agree Susan that our prayers are at times not answered like we hoped!
BUT in hindsight I am very thankful that my Father knew best!
Praise Him!

v.16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
Jesus gave her the opportunity to leave in the middle of an evangelistic presentation. Would we?

v.21-23 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
Not where we worship but how. Our worship must be spiritual but just what we want.

v. 26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
Jesus clearly says to a Samaritan that he is the Messiah. He was more guarded with the Jews because they were expecting a military leader to be the Messiah.

v.29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
She put her appeal as a question and wasn’t dogmatic about it.

v.38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
The disciples were "reaping" the work of the OT prophets. Later Philip would "reap" what Jesus was now sowing (Acts 8).
So often we benefit from the work others have done. Even when we listen to a speaker we reap the benefit of their study.
