Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
So sorry I have not been around. We have had some real time drama around here. It has consumed my time.
Here’s some brownies … chocolate makes it all better … 🙂
5″Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
Wow this is a pretty cool statement.
Jesus is longing to get home.
I wonder what glorify really means to God and Jesus.

Welcome back Valorosa!
Cannot imagine what ‘glorify really means to God and Jesus’….
but a wonderful promise that ‘one day’ we will be there with them!
To share that GLORY.
Great!

Interesting that Jesus prays to the Father for himself!

Yes that is interesting… and prays and asks for us all through this chapter.
Emmanuel God with us … meaning that the Messiah was God in the flesh. A mystery to us indeed …
He who has the Son has life…
The son is in subjection to the Father and yet they are one. Hmmm.
These things are a mystery to us.

what a gorgeous prayer. to be able to come to the end of a life and pray something like this. i wish that we had the same kind of unity here that he speaks of. that we would accomplish what has been given to each one of us to do and that we would be unified with each other the same way the son is united with the father.

I think Jesus’ unity came from the fact he only does those things his father does (John 5:19). I think our disunity comes from the fact we all want to do our own thing. I’m so glad Jesus prays for us in v.20-23!
It’s interesting that the world won’t know God sent Jesus because of his miracles but rather because of our unity. That’s quite a challenge.

I think we do have the unity … it isn’t physical and I think it is mostly found in prayer. It certainly isn’t found in a physical church body. It is found in the body of Christ.
How many times have you felt in perfect harmony and agreement with a complete stranger. You need no words with those who love God.
They just know each other.
They are always found where love reigns.

I also like Jesus’ description of eternal life in v.3 (which is quite different to the usual understanding of eternal life)—”that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

v.6 …and they have obeyed your word.
Despite their lack of understanding, their lack of faith, their doubts, Jesus was able to say “they have obeyed you word.” Essentially they believed that Jesus was God’s Son, the Messiah.

9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.
“They are yours” – We belong to God. Our strength, our joy, our peace, our self worth comes from the fact we belong to God.

v.17-19 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
If we are going to achieve God’s purpose for our lives, we need to be sanctified, that is, ongoing spiritual growth in our lives.
