Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
Jesus said this to his discipes:
v.11 or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.
I think someone might have mentioned this a few weeks ago, that the miracles were for the disciples so that they would believe.

v.21 If we want Jesus to reveal Himself to us here are the conditions, keep his commandments and love him.

Twice in this chapter Jesus says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled." v. 1 & 25 which puts the responsibility on us not to allow our hearts to be troubled and we do this by trusting in God v.1.

v.21&23 both jump out at me here. and i have to wonder…
it seems to be continuing an underlying thread of thought which, of course, would not have stood out to the jews who were accustomed to being the chosen people and would not have understood the full scope of what god was doing here. i still don't think that even now, 1975 years later, that we understand the full scope. but i digress.
it would appear in these two verses that jesus is saying it is a possibility for a person to "have his commandments and keep them, thereby showing their love for him, and that person will as a result be loved by the father, and THEN jesus will disclose himself to that person. (v.21)
he says something similar in v.23. that it is after the keeping of the word that the father and jesus will make themselves known and come and abide with said person. leading me to believe that it is possible for a person to be obedient before they are aware of whom it is they are obeying.
coupled together with the verses from the last chapter taht i spoke of, we are beginning to have a very interesting and W-I-D-E picture of god and his love for those who would "love one another."

I’ve just been reading Floyd McClung writing about making disciples. The model Jesus gave us of making disciples means giving leadership opportunities to very new believers maybe even seekers. After all Jesus sent out the disciples before they knew hardly anything!
McClung also asks the question, when did the disciples become Christians? When Jesus called them, in the upper room when Jesus breathed on them or at Pentecost?

v.3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
Jesus prepared a place for us by his death, resurrection and ascension.

v.12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
People have different ways of interpreting “greater things”. For me it is difficult to imagine greater works than Jesus being more powerful. What is more powerful than raising someone from death? So perhaps greater works means being more widespread. More and more disciples performing miracles would have greater impact and be “greater” than Jesus performing miracles in a geographically small area.

v.13-14 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
(From Constable Commentary) “When we pray in Jesus’ name, we claim to be acting for Him.”

v.30 He has no hold over me
Satan gains a hold over us through sin and wrong attitudes which is why he didn’t have a hold over Jesus.

v.26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
We can trust God to teach and remind us as we are open to his Spirit at work in our lives.

v.2 …if it were not so, I would have told you.
Again we can trust God to tell us what we need to know.
