“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!” Psalm 46:1-3

There’s a lot of media coverage about incidents of extreme weather and the effects of global warming. In minutes, earthquakes can change the landscape. Mountains of ice can crumble into the sea. However, as this verse in Psalm tells us even if this happens, we do not fear because God is our refuge and strength.

Likewise, we do not fear when the stock market crashes or banks collapse, since our security isn’t in our finances. “Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable” (1 Timothy 6:17). Trusting in money is like building a house on sand. It won’t provide security when the storms of life hit us. Insecurity comes from depending on worldly things that we can’t control.

And lastly, we don’t look for security within ourselves. “Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe” (Proverbs 28:26 NIV). Our control over our health, families and friends is limited, so we rely on God to provide for us.

As Christians, we have great confidence because we aren’t trusting circumstances but God’s character. We have hope because he is a loving God who always has good intentions for his people. “Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls” (Hebrews 6:18-19).
