“The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, ‘They have no more wine.’” John 2:3
Running out of wine at a wedding is a major social embarrassment, but surely not serious enough to warrant a miracle. Yet, Jesus’ mother wasn’t afraid to bother Jesus with small problems, and neither should we.
Once, while on vacation, my husband and I enjoyed a yummy meal at a steakhouse. The steak we ordered was on special and came with vegetables for a very reasonable price. When the meals arrived, I was delighted to discover a baked potato on my plate (my favourite way of eating potatoes). The next night, we decided to return to the same restaurant to have the same meal. All went well until the waitress brought the meals to the table, there were no potatoes! We debated for a few minutes about whether we should bother the waitress about such a small thing, especially as the menu had not promised a baked potato but, we did. The waitress headed for the kitchen, but before she even got there, the manager of the entire establishment was standing at our table.
“What’s the problem?”
He partially overheard our conversation with the waitress and realised something was wrong. He immediately went to the kitchen and returned shortly with our potatoes.
Given the choice, we wouldn’t have considered bothering the boss with our small potato problem, but he didn’t seem to mind. He seemed happy to help.
In the same way, because Jesus is our friend, he is happy to be involved in our small-potato problems, as well as the important issues of our lives. God sent Jesus to show us that he is personal and wants to be included in all of our lives.
