“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10

You may have read Bill Watterson’s quote: “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I am so far behind that I will never die.” Some Christians live like this is true. They are busy doing tasks, believing that God has an endless to-do list for them to complete.

However, God sees us as his masterpieces. He has redeemed us through Christ’s sacrifice, and now we’re free from sin, we can become people who have been remade into his image. The “good things” God wants us to do are things like, “accept one another” (Romans 15:7), “Honor one another” (Romans 12:10), “love one another” (Romans 13:8), “live in harmony with one another” (Romans 12:16). God planned for us to be a body of believers committed to supporting one another in love. He has also given us gifts to use in building up the body of Christ. Our gifts vary greatly, some gifts help people in practical ways, while others help people in their spiritual growth. We aren’t gifted equally, but we all have a role to play.

Jesus told his followers, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent” (John 6:29). We don’t generally think of believing as work since we can’t see the immediate results. Yet when we do the “work” of believing, we become people with a different set of priorities. We realise real work isn’t accomplished when we can tick off a to-do list, but when our hearts are changed and we become more like Jesus.
