“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

We are called to peace. We have peace within ourselves and with each other when we aren’t comparing or striving to be something we aren’t. We can be thankful to be a member of the body of Christ and thankful for the gifts, abilities, and opportunities God has given us. As we learn to use our gifts well and appreciate the gifts of others, we grow in fellowship with one another.

One of Satan’s common lies is to tell us that we’re not like other people. That other people are more talented and therefore more valuable to God. Or that we’ve missed our opportunity and God has given up on us. Or that it’s too late to change. These are all lies. God has a role for every one of us, regardless of our age, appearance, intelligence, or wealth. God doesn’t use the world standards for deciding our value. We are all precious to him.

Yet, we see in Jesus’ parable of the talents that not everyone was given the same amount of money (Matthew 25:14-15). This isn’t a reflection on the servants’ value but rather that God has different roles for us to play. For a plane to get off the ground, it’s dependent on every mechanic, engineer, and pilot who works on the plane.

So our value isn’t determined by our role. Whether we’re teaching at a university or cleaning toilets, we’re members of the one body. It’s not what we do that determines our worth and value, but rather it’s who we are. We’re a member of God’s body – precious, indeed.
