Hebrews 1

August 3, 2012

Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.

  1. v.1-2 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.

God took the initiative to reveal himself to us.

  3. v.2-3
Jesus: “heir of all things”; “made the universe”; “is the radiance of God’s glory”; “the exact representation of his being”; sustains “all things”; “provided purification for sins” and “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty”.

And my favourite is that he sustains all things; He sustains me!

  5. v.4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

Jesus is superior to angels because:
    1. “You are my Son” (v.5) (son)
    2. “and he will be my Son.” (v.5) (promised son)
    3. “Let all God’s angels worship him.” (v.6) (received worship)
    4. “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.” (v.7) (not temporary)
    5. “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever.” (v.8) (eternal ruler)
    6. “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth.”(v.10) (creator)
    7. “I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” (v.13) (victor over enemies)
