Paul hardly gets past his introductory remarks before he blurts out the reason for writing v.6 “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ.” Interesting that there has always been people who can’t handle grace and try to pervert the gospel of Christ. Paul points out the gospel he preaches is not v.11 “something that man made up.” When men make up teachings, the teaching is like that of the Pharisees who just made things difficult for people (Matthew 23:4). I wonder why that is? Someone once said, “People are slaves because slavery is easy and freedom hard.”
i find it awesome and scary both at how serious he is about preaching a false gospel…that the person be eternally condemned…that very line should make us truly seek out the Gospel that Jesus came to bring us, and to not add or subtract from it…and tobe watching our Biblical understandings closely
vs 15 But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, ….
A controversial subject among those who study the scriptures…I’ve seen people get right ornery over this…. predestination mentioned again here…. and the fact that the Lord is in complete control … … when God was pleased to reveal his Son in me….. hmmmm 🙂 The Lord chose Saul to be Paul and allowed him to knock off a few believers first…. Does anyone ask why? I will not challenge the wisdom of God but I have questions simply because His ways are higher than mine.
i’m not going to go overboard on the first chapter. but i echo susan and hersch completely. knwoing the true gospel. that, in my mind, is what galatians is all about. one word.
freedom.
(you’re gonna hate me tomorrow. but i’ll bring fresh krispie kremes to make up. cool?)
this goes back to what i was saying about god being at work in everyone’s lives. god used paul in the state he was in at the time he was in to start the missions of the church by persecuting it. then, after the persecution was good and started, he revealed himself in paul and used him to champion the effort that he started.
but in saying what he says, he does not say whether this applies to everyone else or not. so i don’t want to go further than what is written.
My biggest concern about predestination is the people who use it as an excuse. We are told to “go and make disciples of all nations”. Maybe we need to just teach it and leave the outcomes(whether predetermined or not) to God.
First, I’d like to say that I agree with most of what Jon and Susan have said…I’d like to put this forward for you all to think about. Eph.1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— … vs.13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
There is incredible freedom in this. More than many see. But…it sort of blows the whole free choice theory we have ALL run around sharing.
This totally takes away the bible thumping and controlling attitudes among us. The Lord is in complete control and knows all …we don’t need to worry about the outcome of anything or run around controlling anybody… which the present day church is so into. I’m wondering if any of you have noticed this? In past discussions of God choosing us in him before the foundation of the world.. this is what I have picked up… people who claim to believe in the Lord don’t like the idea that they may not have had a choice in their destination…( just like my children did not have a choice who their mom and dad would be ) THUS the free choice teaching…. so what are the ideas out there? These are scriptures… in our face and we need to deal with them and when we do we relax into His love and accept His will for OUR OWN lives and whatever has or hasn’t transpired.
the first thing I thought as I read this was the saying, beware of false prophets. And it is really frightening today that we have so many of them out there. The only way to tell who is false is to think of what they are saying then check your bible. Like the others, I will wait on the predestination. I do wonder though.
Our church does not bible thump but so many do. It turns so many away. I believe we are to preach to gospel thru example, prayer, and talking to those we are praying for rather than at them.
