“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?’” Matthew 25:37
Jesus’ audience would have understood “the nations” (v.32) to be Gentiles, who are surprised to discover they are blessed by God. They have fed, clothed, provided water, shelter and healing balm, as a demonstration of faith, to those who are Jesus’ spiritual brothers and sisters (v.40) and therefore to Jesus himself. It’s a reminder of God’s presence in his people and his promise to Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you” (Genesis 12:3).
