Communion Messages
If you would like to use any of these thoughts at your church, permission is granted, provided such action is not for commercial gain.
Communion : God freely makes us right in his sight
It’s a beautiful picture of what God does for us. God cheers for us, even though we have no right to expect it. We’ve failed to measure up to God’s standards for our life, nevertheless, he’s on our side, cheering and supporting us. When we experience grace like that it causes us to change.
Communion : On being outsiders
Ruth was an outsider because she was born a Moabite. The Moabites hadn’t helped the Israelites during their years wandering in the desert (Deuteronomy 23:3-6) so God told the Israelites to have nothing to do with them. As a Moabite, Ruth wasn’t eligible to be included in God’s family.
Communion : The just requirements of the law
At communion, we remember that God provided a way for us to be saved from his judgement. God is a holy God, a God of justice and righteousness. Sin is contrary to his nature, so God initiated a plan to save us from the consequences of our sin. God sent his own Son to be our sacrifice.
Communion : Of first importance
When I studied church history, I discovered there has always been conflict in the church. There’ve always been disagreements over issues and personalities. On this side of heaven we’re always going to have problems in the church, so what are we to do?
Communion : Symbols of God’s Presence and Power
God gives us physical reminders and symbols of his presence but we should never get so wrapped up in the symbols that they become an end in themselves. We should never be afraid to update our symbols, move them or remove them when they are no longer relevant, even if they have been useful in the past.
Communion : Until he comes
“Until he comes.” Communion is temporary. We’re only to do this until he comes, until his kingdom comes in all its fullness. Communion not only looks back to Jesus’ death on the cross and the forgiveness of our sins, but it also looks forward to that time when we will no longer need to share the bread and the cup.
Communion : So they may live
God told Ezekiel to prophesy a second time: “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again’” (37:9).
Communion : A gift of rest
Likewise, every time we gather for communion, we remember salvation isn’t by our work. Maybe that’s why God told us to share communion regularly because it reminds us salvation is a gift. It’s a gift of rest because we don’t work for our salvation. We partake often because we so quickly forget.
Communion : Create in me a pure heart
Every time we celebrate communion, we have the opportunity to consider God’s graciousness to us. Are we staggered at the magnitude of the sacrifice God made for us? Are we overwhelmed by the love and mercy of God? Are we grateful? Have you ever said, “I can’t believe God would be so good to me?”…
Communion : Transferred into God’s Kingdom
Paul tells us, that God “has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son” (Colossians 1:13 NLT). When we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we become part of God’s kingdom and we learn that things in his kingdom operate very differently to things in…
Communion : Jesus dwells among us
Finally, at the climax of the Bible, we read, “God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God” (Revelation 21:3) (My emphasis).
Communion : Pleasing a God of grace
When we share communion we’re acknowledging that we’re the beneficiaries of unmerited grace, amazing grace, abundant grace. We please God when we accept his grace. There’s nothing we can do to make God love us more, and there’s nothing we can do that would make him love us less.
Communion : Jesus finds us
When we meet a physical person we agree to be somewhere at a mutually convenient time. We then make an effort to be where we said we would be, at the time we said we would be there. But when Jesus comes looking for us, it may not be at our convenience, because he is the one taking the initiative.
Communion : If He is worthy then we are forgiven
Likewise, our acceptance with God has nothing to do with whether we are worthy, it’s a foregone conclusion that we are not. Our acceptance is based on how worthy our sacrifice is. And since Jesus is our sacrifice, the only question we have to ask is, whether Jesus is worthy?
Communion : What is real love?
Not by trying to repay him, not by trying to stir up our own love, but by receiving his love. John goes on to say, “We love (God) because he first loved us” (1 John 1:19). Our love for God grows when we think about how much God loves us and as we receive his love into our hearts.
Communion : Lavish Grace
Often when we pray, we have limited outcomes in mind. We have expectations of how God ought to solve our difficulties and meet our needs. We would rather God solve our problems quickly and quietly, but what if God wants to do more? Or something entirely different to our expectations?
Communion : Up to the minute forgiveness
When I first became a Christian, I was told to, “Keep short accounts with God.” Apparently, I was supposed to confess all the sins I committed to God every day. This struck me as odd. But I didn’t grow up in a Christian home and my Christian friends seemed to think it was a good idea, so I just went along with it.
Communion : God shines his light in our hearts
Still it wasn’t enough for God to reveal himself to us, he also wanted a relationship with us. And so Jesus not only showed us the Father, he also showed us the Father’s heart toward us by dying in our place.
