Colossians 3

December 8, 2007

Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.

  1. 2:20 tells us we died with Christ
3:1 tells us we have been raised with Christ

All in the past tense. We were sinners who were saved by grace but now we are saints who sometimes sin.

    How amazing is that!

  3. v.13 Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

“You’ll never be asked to forgive someone else more than God has already forgiven you.” (Source: WFT 30 Nov 07)

  5. LOL the post above was me … hit the wrong button at the wrong time and posted before I was finished 🙂

It seems that there is a flavour of our own responsibility as in the fruit of the spirit “self control”

Which, when we realize that we have been raised with Christ is a lot easier to maintain. There is a transforming or change of heart when our minds and hearts grasp this.

vs 2 SET your minds on things above.

vs 5 PUT TO DEATH whatever belongs to your earthly nature.

    vs 8 RID yourselves..
    vs 12 CLOTHE yourselves..
vs 13 BEAR with each other..
    vs 14 PUT on Love..
vs 15 LET the peace of Christ..
vs 16 LET the word of Christ..

    You know what though?

THIS is what I find MOST interesting 🙂

    vs 3
For you died, and your life is now HIDDEN with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

    Our lives are hidden ?

    Our lives are hidden ?

  7. Hidden from the world perhaps?

The things God does in our lives are often hidden from others.

Only God knows how authentic our faith really is.

  9. v.1-2 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Set our hearts and minds on heavenly things such as our hope, our spiritual blessings, God’s desires and plans etc.

Set our hearts and minds on heavenly things such as our hope, our spiritual blessings, God’s desires and plans etc.

  11. v.3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Apparently false teachers taught that wisdom was hidden in their secret books but Paul taught that Christ was wisdom and our life is hidden in him.

Apparently false teachers taught that wisdom was hidden in their secret books but Paul taught that Christ was wisdom and our life is hidden in him.

  13. v.12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Who we are affects how we behave. We are God’s chosen people and therefore we behave accordingly

  15. v.16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Three things to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.

  17. v.17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

"Whatever you do" – no longer a list of commands covering every situation but rather "do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus" – do what would please Jesus.

  19. v.18-19 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

Wives have respect for a husband's position not because of inferiority.

Husbands love your wives meaning doing what is best for them, sacrificing their own interests, not being selfish. It wouldn’t be difficult for a wife to respect and submit to this type of husband.

  21. v.24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Here the inheritance is given because of the work that has been done. This inheritance is not a gift.
