Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.
v.24 is a very curious verse: I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.
The Message Bible puts it like this: I want you to know how glad I am that it’s me sitting here in this jail and not you. There’s a lot of suffering to be entered into in this world—the kind of suffering Christ takes on. I welcome the chance to take my share in the church’s part of that suffering. When I became a servant in this church, I experienced this suffering as a sheer gift, God’s way of helping me serve you, laying out the whole truth.

Sorry, just some store brand fruit snacks. They are much sweter than the high priced ones. Maybe that is why I like them so much.
V. 8 Who Also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.
Often I think about the early church that had no bible at all to guide them as a church. How did they learn? Who taught them? How were they taught with wisdom. Then finding verses like to this, I know that it is the Spirit that does it. We are taught not to listen to the Spirit, but to the bible. I think that is partly wrong.
v 18 And He is the head of the Body,the church: who is the the beggining, the first born of the dead;
When I read this verse, I thought of how the Jewish religions had become stale on laws. Thus killing the faith. And Jesus being the new birth of the faith in others. He came when the pharisees were at their height. With the organized church in about the same state now as it was then, maybe the stage is set to see him again.
v 28.5 that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
What is that perfection? That is a cause of much derision and disharmony.

Hey Nate, just been thinking. I’m sure it is not worldly perfection but rather because Christ is the perfect sacrifice for us, when we submit to Him we become perfect because we are acepting His perfection ( … just a thought …)

I left a thought on another blog the other day about dying to self. Saying something like, since we are imperfect, then we can not create a perfect thing. So we must stop trying, and let God create us. Since he is perfect then he can make us perfect or something like that.

vs 24 I’m wondering Susan if this refers to the ongoing persecution that ministers of the gospel have, are and will suffer until the end.
“lacking’ sort of leads you to believe that the church needs to have constant atonement ???
Curious indeed.

This is cool … we are at peace with the Father now.
vs 19
For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach–
Oh the blood of Jesus,
Oh the blood of Jesus,
Oh the blood of Jesus,
It washes white as snow.

v.23 if you continue in your faith
Suggests that there is the possibility some will not.

v.24 Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church
Christ’s afflictions not referring to the cross but rather what Christ suffers now. When believers suffer Christ suffers too because he is in them.

v.28-29 so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.
Even if we only help a few believers in their growth, we are helping build the kingdom and we have Christ’s energy in us to help us do this.

v.11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience
Paul wants the Colossians to be strengthened so they have endurance and patience. Often we want strength to get out of a situation but God gives us strength to stay in a situation.

v.27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
God saving Gentiles wasn’t new but the fact that could be saved by coming to Christ without becoming Jews was. Jews and Gentiles now approached God the same way, through Christ.

From Constable’s commentary, there are four mysteries in the New Testament
1. The body concept of Jewish and Gentile believers united into one body
2. The doctrine of Christ indwelling every believer (v.27)
3. The church as the Bride of Christ
4. The Rapture is also called a mystery
