Jennie Allen’s book, Untangle Your Emotions describes our emotions and the implications on our lives when we don’t manage them well. It’s written in four parts.

In part one, Jennie relates her personal journey of wondering why she was having unexpected emotional reactions to fairly common events.

In part two, Jennie unravels her own history and her husband’s history of how they learnt to handle or mishandle their emotions. Mostly, they had been taught to control, cope and conceal their emotions, but this needed to change if they were going to experience better emotional connections with family and friends.

Part three is Jennie’s solution to the problem of what we do with our emotions. We notice them, we name them, we allow ourselves to really feel them, we share our feelings with God and with others, and finally, we choose what we do with them.

Jennie wraps up in part four with further testimonies from her family’s experiences and also those of others.

Jennie’s personal story was confusing chronologically, as it seems there were times in her early life when she was emotionally healthy. This was also the case with her husband, Zac. However, overall, it was an encouraging and hopeful look at how we can improve our emotional health.
