Songs of Christmas as the sub-title tells us, is the stories and significance of 20 well-loved carols. The book was produced last Christmas as part of Our Daily Bread ministry. I’m actually not a great lover of carols, only because I find them over-utilized at Christmas time. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it gave me a new appreciation for many of the carols.

Robert Solomon has chosen well-known carols, there was only one I wasn’t familiar with, and given us four things about each one. All the verses of the carols (many are left out in modern music collections), the history of the carol, biblical insights and he concludes with a brief reflection. The sections I enjoyed the most were the biblical insights from the carols. Solomon’s thoughts were written in a devotional way which was helpful and insightful. When you consider some of the words of the carols, there is much theology in them, but because we have become so familiar with the words, we sometimes fail to notice their meaning.

The history was also interesting and I like the way Solomon finished each chapter with a reflection.

Overall a good read.
