During the school holidays, Lara travels to Sydney with her mother who cleans houses. Once they arrive, Lara’s mother starts cleaning and Lara wanders into the garden. She sees a boy waving to her from an attic window. She’s greatly surprised as the house is supposed to be empty. Lara doesn’t realise but the magic has begun.
Lara finds the boy, Pierre, who is playing with puppets in a puppet theatre. He invites Lara to help him as he is telling his own history with the puppets. He is looking for his grandmother as he has recently become orphaned. Lara picks a dog puppet, and the puppet theatre comes alive with a real drama.
The story continues as a play script which is a fast-paced adventure as they look for Pierre’s grandma.
Overall, Ursula Dubosarsky has written a story that’s interesting, imaginative and entertaining.
