Mr Bambuckle’s Remarkables by Tim Harris is a fun read. Mr Bambuckle is everyone’s dream teacher. He is entertaining, engaging and makes learning fun too. He is also paranormal and performs many stunts which are pure fantasy. The best way to describe him is to call him, Mary Poppins. He even having similar outcomes in mind.
The story is told in an interesting way. We are introduce to all fifteen students and then the story focuses on about five students’ individual stories which are told in the first person. The book is also intersperse with illustrations, as well as illustrative pages with dialogue between two characters, such as when two characters are swapping notes. This is an effect strategy, amusing, and helps the story move at a fast pace.
The book finishes with the expectation that Mr Bambuckle will be replaced with a teacher that the principal finds more suitable. However, perhaps not, because there is a sequel is coming.
The book has a subtle message which encourages good behaviour, perseverance and a positive outlook. As an adult reading the book, I noticed a couple of occasions towards the end where there was a bit too much unnecessary description, as it was obvious what was happening. However, I’m sure children won’t notice this.
Overall a fun read
