Timothy Keller brings a fresh perspective and insightful truths to the Christmas story in his book, Hidden Christmas : The surprising truth behind the birth of Christ. He looks at the events which have become well known at Christmas from a theological, historical and cultural point of view.
Keller discusses Mary’s willingness as the Lord’s servant and the challenges she faces being pregnant and unmarried in her culture. Joseph’s reputation is also tarnished. Is he the father of Mary’s baby or not? Suddenly, the family is threatened by a ruthless king. They pack up and flee to Egypt with all the difficulties that this entails.
Keller describes the reaction of insignificant shepherds who are the first witnesses to Jesus’ birth, and finally, Simeon prophesies that a sword will pierce Mary’s soul. Mary wouldn’t have expected to watch the early and terrible death of her son. Yet for each of us who is Christian, our faith will at some point bring us pain, whether it’s rejection from friends or family, loss of opportunities or even ridicule. Being a Christian isn’t always comfortable or easy.
Keller concludes with the simple, ordinary means that God uses to bring salvation. An unknown virgin girl becomes pregnant, has a baby who turns out to be the Messiah. He dies an agonising death yet rises from death to bring God’s message of love and hope to the world.
An easy-to-read, encouraging and hopeful book.
