1 Timothy 2
Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.

Umm v.11-15 are a bit tricky…
I don't have a problem with the keeping silent while learning. That is a process that requires silence, as women live to talk, love to opine.
vs.15- trying to make some sense in my NIV where 3 possible interpretations are offered. I don't think it is referring to the birth of Christ. But in many places in the Bible Old and New Test. the Spiritual woman finds fulfillment in raising her children and keeping a Godly home. This is not a strict prohibition of working outside the home, as work is described in Proverbs 31: but to realize the God given role of childbearing along with the rest of life's responsibilities in a fallen world.
It is an awesome task.
I agree Deborah I don't have a problem keeping silent while I'm learning. I need quietness to process what I'm being taught. Some feel "peaceable" would be a better translation than silence which is how the same word is translated in v.2.
I've checked a couple of commentaries which feel v.12 is meaning women should not, "lord it over" men. This makes sense and sits with other Scriptures where women do teach. It would appear some women were getting carried away with their new found freedom in Christ and were creating disturbances in the services by interupting.
It is interesting that v.14 points out Eve was deceived but Adam was not. In other words he wilfully disobeyed God.
v.15 is tricky in that no where else in the Bible is this connection made between salvation and child bearing. The Message puts it like this: On the other hand, her childbearing brought about salvation, reversing Eve. (See also Galatians 4:4 and Genesis 3:15)
hmm yes, I see your point with those two passages.
Interesting discussion!
So we women do not be too hard on ourselves; I like to focus on
v 15
……. if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
Timothy is a lovely study!
Yes indeed. I like v.2 "that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness". It reminds me of another favourite verse of mine, 1 Thessalonians 1:11"Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life."
It's interesting how over the years much has been made of Paul's instruction about women, but not so much is made of Paul's instruction to men: v.8 I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.
I suspect if more men prayed like this women would be less tempted to "lord it over" men.
v.1-2 It seems if I want to live a peaceful and quiet life, I need to pray for those in authority.
Yes, Susan if we believe them [folk in authority] or not, God tells us to pray for them!
Perhaps the whole world would be more peaceful if prayed more and trusted our Father with His outcome.
Yes indeed Alison
v.1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people
“first of all” meaning, of most importance. “all people” meaning, everyone! Since God wants all to be saved (v.4). Furthermore we pray so that we may “live peaceful and quiet lives” (v.3). Yes!
v.11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.
Given that Jews didn’t believe women should be taught the law this is quite a radical statement.
v.12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.
(From Constable’s commentary) In regard to the word ‘authority’: He (Paul) chose an unusual word (authenteo) that could carry negative connotations such as 'to usurp or misappropriate authority' or 'to domineer.' The unusual term probably signifies an unusual situation. In the Ephesian context at least, women had misappropriated authority by taking upon themselves the role of teacher…It is taking inappropriate authority on herself that Paul prohibited. A woman can have authority over others in the church provided she is under the authority of the male leadership of the church.
v.15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
(From Constable’s commentary)"The meaning of sozo [to save] in this passage is once again something like 'spiritual health,' a full and meaningful life.
Even in Paul’s day there were some who were downgrading the value of motherhood.
