1 Thessalonians 4

March 8, 2008

Here’s how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people’s insights.

  1. v.11 make it your ambition to lead a quiet life

I love this verse, it appeals to the introvert to me.

Interestingly enough it seems like God often leads me away from my quiet life!

  3. The Message v.11 “Stay calm”

Staying clam is not easy so many things seem to rob us of our sense of peace.

  5. I am sorry that it looks like you all by yourself in here. I read it often. Just don’t always respond. I can tell that you are really getting something out of it by your blog writing.

  7. Nate, when I am feeling lonely around here I check my stats counter. Last month I had 257 hits which makes me feel better. If people don’t want to comment that’s fine I guess they must be getting something out of it to keep coming back. And as you say I personally get a lot out of doing it anyway.

  9. Chocolate chip cookies, yum.

v.9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other,

We need to develop our own relationship with God (and not rely on our pastor!)

  11. v.13 do not grieve like the rest, who have no hope

We still grieve on occasions, but not without hope.

  13. Sorry I’ve been so delinquent …
    What!?
The chocolate chip cookies are gone!?

Just like Nate to drop in and clean up all the cookies before he leaves … ๐Ÿ˜‰

v6 and that no man transgress and defraud his brother IN THE MATTER because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and SOLEMNLY warned you. NASB

I didn’t notice this before … God will avenge those who have been sexually mistreated. And it looks like mistreatment by those who believe … wow.

And in vs 8 if you reject this warning … you have rejected God, and the Holy Spirit, and back to vs 6 again … there is a solemn warning here …

    Interesting indeed. Serious, very serious.

    vs 11
.. and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.

Cool … there is no mention here of supporting a church group … or supporting a pastor … it seems they were all admonished to work at their own businesses.

Not to say there isn’t mention of this elsewhere … is there ?

Now I’m wondering. Is there any mention of a person with the gift of pastoring being supported by a group of people? Or is that pastoral person supposed to carry their own weight?

I especially like 13 to the end … it is telling me that I will see my Mom again.

Soon and very soon we are going to see the King
    do do do
Soon and very soon we are going to see the King
    do do do
Soon and very soon we are going to see the King

    Hallelujah Hallelujah

We’re going to see the King. ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Good to see you back, Wendy, yes, it does seem like God is particularly serious about sexual sins perhaps because these sins cause so much devastation.

In chapter 5 Paul talks about those “who are over you in the Lord” 5:12-13

and also in 1 Timothy 5:17.

  17. v.1 As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.

When you are doing the right thing – keep on keeping on!
